CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY

Nigeria is in the news again for an absurdity. I guess I shouldn’t be too harsh on my beloved country; Turkey/Syria just bombed a street and 44 got killed and 100 injured. Three weeks ago; two young people killed 4 and injured 100 people at the Boston Marathon. Oh, oh and in Ohio three women who were abducted 10 years ago were found alive in the basement of a house in a quiet normal neighbourhood, the factory building that collapsed killing 1,100 people courtesy a greedy owner. So really, why are we shouting about the 187 people that were killed in Baga or the funeral procession that was attacked and about 24 people were killed in Taraba state; talk of Death at a Funeral; or the 23-95 policemen that were killed by Ombatse Traditionalists in Nasarawa state?? The...

Dear Dr. Ebele Goodluck Jonathan

I hope this letter finds you in good health. How are the children? How is Mummy? She’s been quiet for sometime now. Hope nothing is wrong? How is governing the Nigerian people? I’m sorry; that question must have increased your heart rate by double. I know how that is possible, I deal with them everyday. Where are my manners? I haven’t introduced myself. My name is DSW; one of your subjects. I thought I would engage you in a little problem that I can’t take anymore. I have pondered on whom to write to and address this pressing issue, but I sense there is no better person to handle this than the number one citizen himself. The Nigerian road users! The pedestrians and motorists alike. Everyone is culpable! In fact government officials lead the way in this...

MAKING A STRONG CASE FOR CORRUPTION

I was invited once again for a mushroom ‘Youth-who-want-to change-Nigeria-because-they-are-tired-of-the status-quo’ meeting on Saturday. It was the topic that grabbed my attention. The topic was; you guessed it; about corruption! Frankly, I have failed to understand why we still call for round and square informal tables to discuss about corruption-it has not helped one bit! More an opportunity to ‘speak grammar’, knock a few drinks back and eat if possible; then go back to the same pattern of behaviour. The ‘meeting’ started and I was all fired up. Given the floor, I laid the blame of our corrupt society at the foot of the family; the family being the building block of society. I must admit by the time I heard other views, mine sounded juvenile and...

THE MICHELLE OBAMA SPEECH

As I watched Michelle Obama give her speech at the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina USA; it was clear that here stood a confident, focused woman who knew exactly what she was doing. Wherever Barack was sitting, he must have been counting the hours down till when they got home when he would show her a thing or two about his gratitude! As I watched I became extremely saddened as I thought of my generation and the one behind; could we and would we ever replicate the power couple that is Barack and Michelle? As I watched, I noticed that the delegates to the convention understood that they were there for serious business. They were listening intently, understanding the content of the speech. I cast my mind back to especially PDP Conventions; the buzz...

THE MOTLEY CREW

I’m not a political analyst, a political commentator or even an arm chair critic. I’d rather write about the unending mysteries of relationships. I am however interested to a certain degree in what I’d like to call ‘situational politics’. If it is on the front burner, news worthy item and so on and forth, I’ll engage for a bit and move on; these issues are there anyway to pick up at any point. I’m derailing. Nigeria has the singular honour of being the most demystified mystery; I mean everyone knows by now how corrupt and confused we are but the mystery is we are still standing; bandaged, patched and all. We are a good example of the ‘more you see, hear and read; the more you will never understand. Let’s take a look at the happenings...

AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. PRESIDENT, DR GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Dear Mr. President, Good morning. Im sure you have been better; this is just the way the cookie crumbles! Before you ran for President I had no faith in you; at that time you had been sworn in as the President following the death of your boss; it was a friend of mine who convinced me otherwise; that you had something in you. I softened my stand even though I still wasn’t convinced. However, I had sympathy for you because, there was a power vacuum and those in the corridors of power were determined to see you did not get your legitimate right! I admired your ‘Be still and hold your peace stance’. It was a good pay off. Your Presidential slogan was Fresh Air and Transformation Agenda. Here started your problems-either your slogans were not thought through or...
