A SHORT STORY: THE 21ST CENTURY NATIVITY

Joseph Chukwuma Jnr broke out into a sweat. He had been regaled by stories told by his grandfather on how God had directly stirred their affairs as the ‘Chosen Ones’ so he was quite familiar with how God worked; giving direct messages. The unfortunate thing was they were a small formidable tribe that was constantly attacked or jibed at because of their beliefs and life style; how was he going to live down a pregnant betrothed??? He understood that God could do whatever he wanted; but a little consultation might have prepared him. If he told anyone that he hadn’t slept with her but she was pregnant; with all the sexual permissiveness around he would look like the biggest fool of the 22nd century! He would also be labelled a demon-hearing voices and messages...

THE COMMERCIALISATION OF CHRISTMAS

Having a background and an understanding is very important to being clear about why you believe what you believe or don’t believe; why you accept, tolerate or even do certain things. It is the understanding that keeps you grounded. Majority of us have no clue as to why we celebrate or get caught up in the frenzy of Christmas. So I am going to break down the ‘behind the scene’ about Christmas. Listening to the way we go on about Christmas is sickening; it is about the tree, the snow, the hamattarn, the gifts, buying, sales, more buying, the turkey, cake, food, travelling, Santa Claus, reindeers, sleighs and bells and sillier Christmas movies! Here in the tropics where there is no chance of snow I wonder what we are doing with a half version of Santa-without...

CHRISTMAS: WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?

I am truly beginning to doubt our sanity (already done that) ok, I am beginning to accept that we are indeed mad! By the time Thanksgiving comes round (USA) the Christmas frenzy and madness takes off on a sure start, the world over! Initially, I thought Christmas was a day to mark and remember the day our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was born as part of the redemption plan of God. Well, that was what it turned out to be eventually. Apparently, as I would later learn Christmas was a pagan tradition; Saturnalia a pagan holiday was ensconced in lustful indulgence of the flesh in...

TRADITIONS

Nolstagia. Sometimes thinking back on the years gone by can be a problem. I remember things and wish that they didn’t change. I wonder; where have all the good days gone to. I remember loving Sunday because it was practically the only day that we got to eat white rice, stew, fried plantain and occasionally salad. During the week it was Tuwo and the varying soups. Most annoying was Mummy would keep the most important aspect of the meal; yep; the protein till we finished the ah.. ‘food’ That was torture. Sunday was sweet torture though. I have carried this tradition on. I can’t eat any other meal on Sunday. Shops were closed on Sunday. You just could not buy anything on a Sunday. Sunday Service was 10am standard. Service finished at lunch time. Now I feel...
