WHEN FACEBOOK VISITED THE REPUBLIC OF LAGOS

It should have caught on by now that Lagos State is no longer with us. They have become a country within a country and like serious minded people they have not dealt with distractions like challenging the country with cession. They don’t even need to. There strong economy has even done that for them! They have not thrown a tantrum on anything. Neither have not been sitting in Abuja waiting for handouts, allocation or bailout money(which they politely turned down). Instead they have been deliberate and it is paying off. Just when we started cursing the curse of the black gold, they found some in their back yard and will soon start exporting to the UK; on top of everything else. *SIGH* Little wonder that Mark Zukerberg just faced Lagos. Time is money and money...

THE ILLUSION OF FREEWILL

Trying hard not to look at the 3-inch high lilac sandals; I knew it was a losing battle. I would buy the shoes. My shopping partner was not impressed by the visible pressure I was under as I failed to win. I had a choice; to admire and walk away or admire, buy and bear whatever consequences came with the decision. It was just a pair of shoes but it was a decision no doubt. Generally, when we talk about freewill and choice, we aren’t thinking mundane things like picking up shoes. The argument to that lies in the grey area of need vs. want. Anyway, the thing is that you have the power within you to take decisions for your life. Every decision you take right or wrong, good or bad is actually within the realm of you not controlled by fate or God....

THE TEN

I was brushing my hair a couple of weeks ago when I saw nottwo but a rash of grey hair! I couldn’t believe it. I remember clearly knowing somehow that grey hair was for old people. The way I even perceived ‘old’ was as if it would never catch up with me. Well, I’m not 40 yet and it has! I look at President B. Obama and reckon I’m in good company. He is the leader of the free world who had come in with a nice head of curly black hair now it is speckled with grey hair. I might be as a result of leading a troublesome world but if this younger generation is greying way ahead of time then it must be a reflection of being under much more pressure at an earlier age. The strands of grey hair set me thinking. It set me on the path to get a code that...

DIRTY SEX, SACRED MONEY, CLEAN CHURCH (PT2)

I had started by being baffled at the Church’s attitude towards sex especially among its adherents. With the serious issues that abound concerning sex and the focal point it holds, you can’t blame me for wondering why the shrouding in mystery and avoidance of the subject matter. Curiously the Church will talk about money though; and lots of it. It devises programs all year round for this purpose; coaching sessions in the art of giving, creating opportunities for its members to give, delivering message after message on the need to line the pockets of the church. If you want a job, sow a (financial) seed; spouse?; Pastors’ Appreciation Day is just the right time; children? the bigger the gift in sacrifice the closer to an answer-a car, a house, tickets abroad...

WE DO NOT NEED GOD

I got a call from my tailor asking for a point of clarification on the length of a skirt I had asked him to make for me. In parting, as I reiterated the length; he said ‘if God allows, the length will be as you want it.’ This response can only be interpreted in one way as it relates to this situation. I laughed; he had taken the measurement, he had a sample, he has sewn for me before in that length; why would God create a misstep in the sewing of this skirt?? How did God get into the length of my shirt?? I have really grown puzzled about how Nigerians call God in everything; the ‘Resignation and Situation game’; whatever happens we are resigned to the treacherous will of God. However, what became even more puzzling to me is this; with a country that calls...
