THE ILLUSION OF FREEWILL

Trying hard not to look at the 3-inch high lilac sandals; I knew it was a losing battle. I would buy the shoes. My shopping partner was not impressed by the visible pressure I was under as I failed to win. I had a choice; to admire and walk away or admire, buy and bear whatever consequences came with the decision. It was just a pair of shoes but it was a decision no doubt. Generally, when we talk about freewill and choice, we aren’t thinking mundane things like picking up shoes. The argument to that lies in the grey area of need vs. want. Anyway, the thing is that you have the power within you to take decisions for your life. Every decision you take right or wrong, good or bad is actually within the realm of you not controlled by fate or God....

THE BATTLE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL

Frankly, I don’t understand the purpose of this never ending war. I’m born bad but have to strive against that nature day-by-day which to say the least is a daunting task. If we are going to be honest there are only two shades in the world of the above; black (bad-sorry to the revolutionists/emancipators) and white (good-sorry again to the revolutionists/emancipators); grey is a concept created by us to cope with the oft difficult world of choice. We are created with the choice to do right or wrong and to bear the consequences of our decisions. Note that choosing what we have come to know as right doesn’t necessarily mean that there is a pot of gold waiting at the end of the rainbow for you; neither does choosing wrong mean that there is a deathly...

THE POWER OF CHOICE

One of the greatest gifts given to us as human beings is the power of choice. The ability to look at options, weigh them and take a decision. However, with the chaos we so often find our lives in and in lives of those around us, it is obvious we don’t comprehend the power we have when we take decisions. Life is complicated but simple. The simplicity in life being that you accept that life is complicated! Once we deal with that, we grasp two facts; as human beings our lives are independent yet intertwined and as such whatever decision I take it won’t only affect me but someone or others directly and indirectly. I honestly wonder why life is full of SO MUCH variety. It is often confusing. This becomes pretty evident in the one area that plagues all of...

KNOW YOURSELF

I used to think that reaching a certain age and level in life meant you ‘knew’ yourself. Well, wrong. You might have reached adulthood; even being almost safely defiant to a parent hiding behind; ‘I’m an adult now, I can take my own decisions’ blah, blah. While this could be true; but did the person behind this new found freedom understand the import of this ability?. I found out the hard way. What does it really mean to ‘know you’? Can we truly ever understand who we are? Remember you are a gene pool of people that for the most part you don’t know and never will in a sense speaking!(they are dead!) Sometimes, in the quiet recess of your mind; you wonder ‘what did I just do?’ why do I do certain things that make me wonder too?’ Majority of us...
