SHORT STORY: THE HOTEL ROOM

As you approached the hotel, the road leading to it gave an idea of what to expect; the drive was bumpy and dangerous. Pedestrian, trader, motorcyclist and car maneuvered potholes, jagged edges of the road and obstacles carelessly strewn across it. Each, fighting to get to the good part of the road. Loud voices cursing as near-misses occur. Screeching; as cars suddenly came to a halt and avoided a mishap. Roadside traders looking unperturbed at the chaos all around them as they focused on selling their goods. The occasional one would move with the tray a few meters away if a swerve seemed uncomfortably close and go back immediately. This was how she remembered the road twenty years ago and this was how she met it, twenty years later. Nothing much had...

A POSSESSION TILL DEATH

Aunt Yetunde’s husband had been dead for 10 years now. I was just leaving university when he died and I could feel the pain of my four cousins losing a father, a parent who loved them. Luckily for Aunt, one was about to graduate university, two were in secondary school and the baby of the house was in primary school. Things weren’t quite easy for Aunt as she reared her children the best way she could. I sometimes wonder how she did it. I also wondered why she hadn’t remarried especially since in those 10 years Uncle Dare had lost his wife, dated, remarried and sired two children! I was proud of my mum as I heard her often check up on Aunt Yetunde. I felt comforted that if I was ever a widow, my in-laws would check in on me, make me feel less...

ROLLING IN THE DEEP

I She annoyed him. He couldn’t place his finger on what precisely annoyed him. He wasn’t sure if it was her confidence, or the way she took charge at the meetings or what he perceived as her nonchalant attitude towards him. Whatever it was, she annoyed him. Anyone that knew him, knew he was an easy going guy so the problem could not be him. He was the kind of guy who was generally tolerant of people and their quirks. What was worse, they had to work together. ‘Hi’ she said as she extended her hand for a handshake. He could remember when their principal introduced them to each other, he was quite indifferent to her. She was one of those plain Jane’s that further paled in comparison to the beautiful woman he had married. He compared all...

FORBIDDEN LIAISONS

Once a man and a woman take their vows and promise to leave and cleave; in some cases a lifelong battle ensues. In times gone by the men were the susceptible ones while it was heart-stopping news to hear that a woman was involved in an extra-martial affair. This is not the case today. What makes the status quo frightening is women cheat emotionally while most men cheat sexually. I’m not sure anymore if being emotionally deprived is the main reason women cheat now. What leads to the feelings that oft consume a man and a woman that they risk almost everything? Most times the passion and lust that came with the feelings fizzle out; another remarkable thing. I really have wondered if we are doomed from the time we enter this world. Some people will thankfully never...

A SHORT STORY: THE 21ST CENTURY NATIVITY

Joseph Chukwuma Jnr broke out into a sweat. He had been regaled by stories told by his grandfather on how God had directly stirred their affairs as the ‘Chosen Ones’ so he was quite familiar with how God worked; giving direct messages. The unfortunate thing was they were a small formidable tribe that was constantly attacked or jibed at because of their beliefs and life style; how was he going to live down a pregnant betrothed??? He understood that God could do whatever he wanted; but a little consultation might have prepared him. If he told anyone that he hadn’t slept with her but she was pregnant; with all the sexual permissiveness around he would look like the biggest fool of the 22nd century! He would also be labelled a demon-hearing voices and messages...
