A TALE OF TWO WOMEN

Atinuke was sweating as usual when she got back into the office. She had complained two weeks ago that the air conditioner in her car wasn’t cooling effectively anymore. It was safe to assume that it still hadn’t been fixed. She barely had sat down when our supervisor walked into the office. She was certain he had it in for her; the Universe had been kind to her once more. It wasn’t my business why Atinuke always came to the office harried but today something piqued my curiosity. I noticed what must have been palm oil stains on her blouse and what looked like flour in her hair. She was oblivious. So I made it my business. This was no way for a Customer Service Executive in a prestigious firm to look. When she burst into tears, I remembered...

PLATINUM DIGGER

And so this conversation has been raging for a long time now. Personally I don’t see why. Once a woman gets into a relationship with a man who happens (HALLELUYA!) to have deep pockets she goes through a number of tests (somehow or somewhere down the line ) to ascertain whether or not she is in the relationship with the man for his money. Booby traps are placed, minefields mapped out, friends/ relatives self-recruited to find out this sensitive bit of information. I mean why has it become such a grave issue if women seek to ensure before they end up in a man’s house by studying his level of financial muscle and real time money if he has the capacity to cater for her and their eventual family??? That women are branded “gold...

THE KISS

I can remember my first kiss. I was 17 going on 18. I was pretty focused on my education and Mum’s unspoken pronouncement of murder if I walked in one day confused that somehow she would be an understanding human being if i told her that I gotten knocked up helped to keep me on the straight and narrow. Anyway, I had no time for boys, so the issue of hormones possessing me was not a front burner problem. However, Nature and humanity are real and present. The most that being focused would buy you is time; to sometimes think through the consequence(s) of possible decisions. Curiosity and animal instinct embedded in every single being who will have the ‘misfortune’ of going through teenage hood will come knocking no; demanding....

A POSSESSION TILL DEATH

Aunt Yetunde’s husband had been dead for 10 years now. I was just leaving university when he died and I could feel the pain of my four cousins losing a father, a parent who loved them. Luckily for Aunt, one was about to graduate university, two were in secondary school and the baby of the house was in primary school. Things weren’t quite easy for Aunt as she reared her children the best way she could. I sometimes wonder how she did it. I also wondered why she hadn’t remarried especially since in those 10 years Uncle Dare had lost his wife, dated, remarried and sired two children! I was proud of my mum as I heard her often check up on Aunt Yetunde. I felt comforted that if I was ever a widow, my in-laws would check in on me, make me feel less...
